What is a BSB number?
A BSB (Bank State Branch) number is a 6-digit code used in Australia to identify a specific bank branch. Together with an account number, a BSB uniquely identifies a destination for electronic funds transfers, direct debits, BPAY payments, and payroll.
BSB format
BSBs are formatted as XXX-XXX — a 3-digit institution prefix followed by a 3-digit branch identifier. The institution prefix corresponds to the financial institution (e.g. 06x = Commonwealth Bank, 03x = Westpac, 01x = ANZ, 08x = NAB).
How to use this lookup
Search by the 6-digit BSB number (e.g. 062-000), by bank name (e.g. "Commonwealth"), or by branch name or suburb. Results show the financial institution, branch name, address, state, and which payment systems the BSB is registered for.
Payment systems
Each BSB entry lists the payment systems it participates in:
- DE — Direct Entry (BECS): standard direct debits and credits, payroll, and bank transfers.
- PEH — PEXA Electronic Hub: used for property settlement transactions.
- PTR — Paper/MICR: older paper-based clearing, now rarely used.
Data source
BSB data is sourced from the official Australian BSB registry and is updated weekly. The dataset covers all active financial institutions operating in Australia.
Data is updated weekly. Always confirm BSB details with your bank before initiating a large transfer.
